What the Vimśottarī daśā is

Vimśottarī — “of one hundred and twenty” — is the daśā system Parāśara's Bṛhat Parāśara Horā Śāstra sets out first and the one most used in India: a cycle of 120 years divided among the nine planets, always in the same order and for the same lengths (Ketu 7, Venus 20, Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19, Mercury 17 years). Each planet's period, its mahādaśā, divides into nine antardaśās in the same order, each in proportion to its planet's years.

Where the cycle begins is set by your birth star, the nakshatra the Moon occupied when you were born. Every nakshatra has a ruling planet, and the part of the nakshatra the Moon had still to cross is the part of that planet's mahādaśā left at birth — the balance. Because the Moon crosses a nakshatra in about a day, the birth time matters: an hour moves the dates by months.

The years are sidereal years of 365.2564 days, the year the sidereal chart counts, so dates can differ by a day or two from almanacs that count another year. Every nakshatra and its ruling planet are on the nakshatra pages; your birth star alone is on the nakshatra calculator.
