Your birth star is the nakshatra — one of 27 star-mansions of 13°20′ — the Moon was in when you were born; each is split into four padas. It sets where your Vimśottarī daśā begins and the tārā each transit carries for you. Your Moon sign is the sign that star lies in, and your ascendant (lagna) is the sign rising in the east at your birth minute — it needs the time, and moves a sign about every two hours.
Every star, sign and ascendant has its own monthly forecast.
