How the dates are reckoned

Amāvāsyā is the thirtieth tithi, the last before the new moon; Pūrṇimā the fifteenth, ending at the full moon. A tithi is the time the Moon takes to gain twelve degrees on the Sun, so it begins and ends at any hour. The day kept is the one whose sunrise falls in the tithi — times here are for India (IST), and a city far to the east or west can keep a different day.

The month names are amānta — the month that ends at the new moon, as in South and West India. In the pūrṇimānta reckoning of North India an Amāvāsyā carries the next month's name: Diwali's Amāvāsyā is amānta Āśvina and pūrṇimānta Kārtika. A Pūrṇimā has the same name in both. An adhika (extra) month — one with no Sankrānti in it — is named as such.

The Sun's twelve sign-changes are on Sankranti 2026, and the fasts of the eleventh tithi on Ekadashi dates.
