Nadi dosha
Nadi dosha is when both partners' birth stars fall in the same Nadi — Adi, Madhya or Antya — and the Nadi koota gives 0 of its 8 points. Which Nadi each of the 27 nakshatras is in, and when the matching keeps the points.
Read your own chart, free →Nāḍī is the eighth koota of Aṣṭakūṭa matching — the 36-point Gun Milan — and the one with the most points: 8 of the 36. Each person's birth star (the nakshatra the Moon was in at birth) belongs to one of three nāḍīs. When the two stars are in different nāḍīs the koota gives all 8 points; when they are in the same nāḍī it gives none. That is all “Nāḍī doṣa” means: the same nāḍī, and 0 of 8 in this one koota.
The three nāḍīs
Ādi (vata): Ashwini, Ardra, Punarvasu, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Jyeshtha, Mula, Shatabhisha, Purva Bhadrapada. Madhya (pitta): Bharani, Mrigashira, Pushya, Purva Phalguni, Chitra, Anuradha, Purva Ashadha, Dhanishta, Uttara Bhadrapada. Antya (kapha): Krittika, Rohini, Ashlesha, Magha, Swati, Vishakha, Uttara Ashadha, Shravana, Revati.
The stars run through the three in a zig-zag — Ādi, Madhya, Antya, then back, Antya, Madhya, Ādi — so every nāḍī holds nine of the twenty-seven. The three are matched with the three doṣas of Āyurveda: Ādi with vāta, Madhya with pitta, Antya with kapha.

A star that spans two signs is listed with both: which sign the Moon was in matters for the reliefs below.
When the matching keeps the eight points
The same nāḍī does not always cost the points. The app's matching gives all 8 when both stars share a nāḍī but any one of these holds:
- The same Moon sign. Both Moons are in the same sign (rāśi).
- The same or friendly sign lords. The planets that rule the two Moon signs are the same planet, or friends — 4 or 5 of 5 in the Graha Maitri koota.
- Benefic sign lords. Both Moon signs are ruled by one of Mercury, Jupiter and Venus.
Between them these keep the points in 65% of the pairings that share a nāḍī: of the 3,888 ways two birth-star quarters (padas) of the same nāḍī can meet, 2,520 keep all eight. Some almanacs and families apply further reliefs of their own; this page names only the three the app computes, so another almanac's score can differ.
One koota of eight
Gun Milan adds eight kootas — Varna, Vashya, Tara, Yoni, Graha Maitri, Gana, Bhakoota and Nāḍī — to a score out of 36; traditionally 18 is the threshold and 24 and above very good. Nāḍī is the largest of the eight, so families notice it, but it is one factor among them, read beside the rest of the score, Mangal dosha and the whole of both charts. No single koota decides a marriage.
